Increasingly, students ask themselves how are they going to pay for school even though they have the desire but not necessarily the funds?

by Christina Williams

Increasingly, students ask themselves how are they going to pay for school even though they have the desire but not necessarily the funds?

Going to a free college can help students by saving money and getting a quality education to help keep you from getting into a big debt. Many different varieties of free colleges are available, and there are a number of ways to achieve a free college education.

If you are seeking an education for lower cost, you need to look at the variety of ways that free colleges work. Some of the free college out there work by giving free college tuition in exchange for work study programs.

These students have a job working a limited number of hours weekly to pay for their tuition, and sometimes even room and board as well.As students who study choose to work in their field, they have a double advantage – they get experience in their field and the education for free.

The colleges which offer free tuition do so by combining federal grants with scholarships and grants from their endowment. What exists is a chance to attend without spending money they don’t have or going into debt that they can’t afford.

More and more, this is being done with universities which wish to get good students and a diversified student body.

Many states over free college specifically for the most talented students in class. For instance, states like New Jersey have a particularly unique program. If you happen to be in the top 20% of your secondary school class, you are eligible to go to your nearby community college at no costs. And these types are schools aren’t just community colleges either. There are full fledged Universities with these opportunities as well.

In the garden state of NJ, they also have a secondary program that just begins with the no cost free college community institution strategy. Should a student maintain their outstanding grades and academic standards, should they decide, they can tranfer to one of New Jersey’s stop in state schools such as the well known Rutgers University

It is more vital than it’s ever been to obtain a college education and get ahead in the job market. It is for this reason that colleges that charge no fees are very significant to the development of the educational landscape.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid or otherwise known as FAFSA is acknowledged as a very important procedure for all college goers. It assists in ascertaining the suitability of the student to get any financial aid for their education. The form should be filed in before any financial assistance can be granted, such as loans, work study programs and grants.

Many kinds of details will be required to complete the FAFSA form. Personal details like Date of Birth, Social Security Number, and contact details will need to be filled in. Also be prepared to share information about income and tax, educational qualifications, living arrangements, etc.

Keep in mind, if under the age of 21, these questions will be based on your parents income. There are some exceptions to this rule, check the website or speak to a financial aid officer to see if you might qualify.

To help with answering the questions, you’d need copies of either your income tax returns or of your parents, and perhaps also details about any bank accounts that generate interest income.

Wherever necessary you may choose to make corrections. But it is much better if you are aware of all details and know the correct answers. To this end, ensure that all the details and related documents are ready for you to cross check. Most importantly, make it a point that you submit the application before the deadline, which can differ for your school from that of the Government. It is best to keep a check on this.

You can submit your application either via the FAFSA website or can request for an application form and mail it in. If you want to use the website to fill your application, you would be first required to register for an account by creating a login and a password. You will then be given a PIN number which is automatically generated. This PIN can also be requested by mail if you choose so. You have the option of filling in the form at your convenience and you can save whatever information you have filled in and resume any time later. Once the online application is submitted, you receive a confirmation by email as well as a reference number.

The details submitted in the FAFSA form will assist in assessing your EFT or the Estimated Family Contribution. This number helps in assessing whether you have to make any contributions to the tuition costs. If the EFT is 0, this means that you do not have to pay any part of the tuition charges. On the other hand, if the EFT is more than 0, you would have to pay a portion of your tuition costs. Bear in mind that it is in your advantage to fill the FAFSA form, even if you are ineligible for the federal aid. The FAFSA application will help you in applying for and getting study loans, scholarships or even campus work-study.

The FAFSA results for all applicants are received by the respective school and you will be contacted by your school if any more financial or personal particulars are needed. Details required can range from copies of your tax returns, to W-2s, or any relevant documentation. This happens as part of the verification process, and is applicable for selected candidates. When the applicant clears this routine, they will be eligible for financial grants.

If you are just starting college or are still an undergraduate, Sallie Mae also offers up on option for Private student loans. Sometimes a student can’t get enough money to cover all of their tuition through federal loans. This leaves Private loans as the next option. Private student loans from Sallie Mae can also be used for all types of living/college costs and fees. Unfortunately, private student loans have higher interest rates which will make monthly payments higher when a student starts to pay them back.

Sallie Mae also offers international student loans for those that are going abroad to get an education. These loans have good rates, low fees, and allow you to choose your repayment plan.

There other options besides Sallie Mae. In the United States the government offers students other student loan options – PLUS loans and Stafford loans.

If a student needs money for tuition and a Stafford loan is available the student should take because they are usually the best case scenario repayment wise. With fixed interests rates reaching a low 6% and the fact that these student loans can be used for any type of college expense Stafford loans are a popular choice when available. A student will need to fill out a FAFSA in order to be able to receive a Stafford loan.

The other option offered by the United States government is a PLUS loan. Once again a student is required to fill out a FAFSA, which is a common procedure when attending college any, in order to have a chance at getting a PLUS loan. These student loan programs are offered at different interest rates to undergrads and graduate students or parents. The PLUS loan usually has the most minimal interest rate available which makes paying them back easier for the student.

These are a few student loan programs that are available to students. Finding a student loan can seem like a daunting task especially when looking at all the costs and numbers, but not everyone can get their education cost completely covered by scholarships and grants. Student loan programs help you pay for a student’s education costs so they can focus on learning and not on paying.

Now that you’ve graduated college, you’re probably focused on finding that first job. With many jobs hard to find, paying off your college debt is probably at the bottom of your priority list. However, for those who take paying off their college debt seriously, the burden of being in debt is significantly reduced, building credit and allowing you to stay ahead of the financial curve.

There are a number of pays to pay off your college debt. Fortunately for those who have taken Federal loans, grace periods and deferments can help you until you find a full time job that allows you to begin making payments against your loan. Regardless of your employment situation, the responsibility of loan repayment is yours and yours alone.

Depending on how recently you graduated and type of loans you’ve taken out to pay for college, you may qualify for different loan repayment options. One of my personal favorites is student loan consolidation. The benefit here is that you aggregate all of your outstanding loans into a single loan with different payment terms. This may result in a lower interest rate and smaller monthly payment.

Some individuals who consolidate see longer repayment periods. However, a little known method of reducing your payment period is by making one extra payment towards the principle of the loan each and every year. For longer repayment periods, this reduces the amount owed and the life of the loan significantly.

Before sending your lender any extra money, begin with an open dialog. Do they penalize those who attempt to pay off their loan prior to expiration? In the past this was a common issue. Today, because of increasing defaults and the difficult economy, most lenders are happy to get their money back. If the bank accepts early payment, then do your best to stick to an additional payment each year.

What difference can an extra payment make? As I’ve already explained, it is significant. So make sure that when you send in the extra payment, you explicitly indicate that the payment is go towards principle, not your regularly scheduled payments. If it doesn’t go towards the base amount, you’ve done nothing other than prepay next month’s bill.

Get yourself into the habit of making one extra payment each year. This may seem like a difficult task, but think of it this way. Even if your monthly payment is 350 dollars, saving 30 bucks a month to put towards your loan at the end of the year is really no big deal. The result is you will only be making payments for say, 7 years versus 10. Short term pain equals long term gain. Imagine what it would be like to not have that monthly loan.

Some people are truly overwhelmed by the idea of paying back a large amount of debt. The key is to focus on making your monthly payment and at the same time, lowering your overall outstanding amount. Speak with your bank, creditors, and lender to understand how they can help ease the repayment process. Over time you will find you debt has vanished and you saved thousands in repayment.

There are a number of bad things that can happen if you default on your student loans. Before you borrow any money for college you must have the mindset that you are responsible for paying back your student loans and you will begin the repayment process on time and stick with it.

Going to school online or via a traditional institution will cost you money. In fact, it costs more than most can afford. As a result, the majority of individuals going to college today take out multiple loans in order to pay for this significant expense. Regardless of which loans you use to pay for college, you must pay them back upon graduation.

What happens if you don’t pay back your loans? Loan defaults continue to rise in today’s economy and the impact is very negative for those individuals who cannot or choose not to repay them. Financial difficulties, employment problems, and relationship issues can all result

When you fail to pay back your loans, your credit score will be negatively impacted. In fact, this information can stay on your credit report for more than five years after it has been discharged. This significantly hurts your ability to get future loans, rent and apartment or buy a house. Anything that requires an application will more than likely reference your credit. Companies do not want to sell you anything unless they know that you have the ability to pay for it.

Not only can poor credit or personal bankruptcy impact your financial health, it can also have a negative impact on your relationships. Each year thousands of people get divorced over money problems, foreclosures, and cars being repossessed because they were unable to pay back loans and hurt their ability to acquire credit. Don’t fall prey making minimum payments, skipping payments, and ultimately defaulting on your repayment schedule.

Even if you are able to recover from a failure to repay your loans, the stigma will stay with you for some time. Building good credit should be your goal and the best way to accomplish this is through making on time payments and only paying for those things for which you already have the money.

Student loans are rarely forgiven by financial institutions or government agencies. If you are struggling to make your monthly payments for any reason, immediately contact your lender to work out a positive resolution to the problem. Often individuals wait until it is too late to improve the situation and regret it afterwards.

The one thing to keep in mind is that if you get into a difficult situation, often times you can work with your lender to restructure your loan. By stretching out your loan repayment or taking advantage of other repayment programs, you lender can lessen the short term burden and get you through the rough patch. The key is to never get into a repayment issue. If you do however, admit your problems to your lender and see how they can help.

I’m often asked what happens if you don’t pay back your student loans? The short answer is “nothing good.” As more and more students default on their loans, the consequences continue to build. Loan default causes many financial difficulties and could have a negative impact on your ability to borrow money in the future. Furthermore, the responsibility to pay back the debt never truly goes away.

When college graduates fail to pay back student loans, credit ratings are damaged. Worse yet, even if they start paying on time, the impact to your credit score can last many years. Credit score is important because it is the basis by which businesses, credit card company’s, banks, auto dealers, lend money. In fact, a bad credit score can also make it difficult for you to get an apartment. The best bet is to avoid being in a situation where you need to repair your credit score.

For those who are able to get back on their feed and repay their loans, the difficulties associated with a lapse in repayment can stay around for a while. Once a credit score is damage, repairing that score takes work and time. If you find yourself in that type of situation, your focus should be on improving that score and making all financial payments on time for at least three years.

Student loans are rarely forgiven by financial institutions or government agencies. If you are struggling to make your monthly payments for any reason, immediately contact your lender to work out a positive resolution to the problem. Often individuals wait until it is too late to improve the situation and regret it afterwards.

The good news is that you can work with your lender to restructure your loan payments. There are a variety of repayment options your lender can employ to help you through difficult times. Remember that they want to get paid so they have a vested interest in working with you towards a successful outcome. Again, don’t wait until it is too late to do anything. You are better off admitting that you are having repayment problems versus ignoring your bill and hoping it will go away.
